Inherited Settings: How to align and smartly change settings on your flipbooks.

Inherited Settings: a time saver for when you need to apply sweeping changes across folders, and subfolders.

Updated over a week ago

Making changes on a single Flipbook is easy enough, but imagine if you need to apply the same change, such as an adjustment in your branding, or a region setting, across tens, or even hundreds of Flipbooks.

Luckily, you can skip the boredom and risk of errors associated with repetitive, monotonous tasks, by taking advantage of inherited settings in iPaper.

📖 This guide explains:

Inherited settings: what are they, and how do they work?

In iPaper, your Flipbooks and folders are organized hierarchically. This means that a single folder can contain multiple Flipbooks, and subfolders. Everything within a folder is seen as a 'group'. In turn, any subfolders can contain further folders and Flipbooks.

Settings are applied hierarchically to groups, and any changes made to a group are automatically applied to any folders or Flipbooks within this group. This process is known as inheritance.

💡 Think about it this way: if you edit the settings of a folder, all Flipbooks in that folder will inherit them.

Here's a visual example of how inherited settings work across folders and Flipbooks, in iPaper:

How to identify which iPaper settings are inheritable

To show you where inherited settings are possible, we have added a folder tree icon beside each inheritable setting:

This symbol means that this setting will be applied to all subfolders and Flipbooks contained within the folder.

In the example above, a preloader image applied to a folder would result in the preloader image being applied to all the Flipbooks housed within that folder.

How to apply an inheritable setting

It's pretty simple:

  1. Add all the Flipbooks you want in the folder.

  2. Right-click on the folder for which you want to apply inherited settings, and select Edit settings.

  3. Edit any settings you want under General, Design, Modules, and Integration.

Any setting you change with the folder tree icon will be applied to all the Flipbooks in the folder.

Work smart, not hard

Inherited settings help when you work across your Flipbooks, and folders more effectively. This means you only have to take the time to set up folders with their preferred settings and, whenever you create a new Flipbook, or move one across folders, it automagically receives the correct settings. 🧙‍♂️
