FAQ: Why isn't video playing in my Flipbook?

Here's a checklist of how to make sure your video enrichments play, every time.

Updated over 6 months ago

Videos are a powerful way of creating engaging Flipbook browsing experiences. However, failing to load, or play, can have the opposite effect. Here's a checklist of things to consider, to ensure your videos play properly, as well as possible reasons why they don't.

The browsing device is in battery-saving mode

If your visitor's device is in battery-saving mode, this often disables any videos from autoplaying, in order to avoid unnecessary battery usage. As such, video enrichments with autoplay settings, such as ambient videos, will not play as intended.

The file is too large

The higher the resolution of your video, the higher the file size will be. The larger the file size, the more bandwidth is required from your visitor's connection to load it. Bear that in mind if your visitors tend to visit from low bandwidth areas.

⚠️ Please note that the maximum allowed video file size in iPaper Media library is 250 MB.

If you need to include a video that is larger than the maximum file size, or that is friendlier to visitors from low bandwidth areas, consider embedding it into your Flipbook from a streaming service, such as YouTube or Vimeo.

💡 You can also embed videos from YouTube without showing their cookie consent banner. Learn how in our guide:

The video is an unsupported format

iPaper supports exclusively the MP4 format, which is widely supported by most browsers. We recommend that you always use MP4 video encoded with H.264 codec.

💡 You see which browsers support the H.264 code here.

Uploading a video in an unsupported file format, such as .MOV or .AVI, will result in the video not playing.

💡 You can also use the Mobile Device 720P HD Adobe Media Encoder Preset to optimize your videos for mobile devices.

Your video is not optimized

A poorly optimized video can result in long load times, which can give the impression that your video doesn't play. If your visitors only view a page in your Flipbook for a number of seconds, and your video takes longer than this to begin playing, they'll miss out on your wonderful content!

You can learn about how to optimize your videos for Flipbooks, in our guide below:

My video plays, but without sound!

If you have embedded a video in-line into your Flipbook, and toggled the autoplay function, this will result in the video playing without any audio.

This is intentional, as autoplaying videos are intended for ambient videos, that can enhance a browsing experience without providing direct information about, for example, your products.

If you need your video to play with sound, consider toggling off the autoplay function, or even presenting it in a Popup Media Gallery enrichment.

Learn about the different ways you can include videos in your Flipbooks in our guide:

My video plays, but I can't see the interface/controls!

When embedding videos in-line into your Flipbook, you have the option to toggle on, or off, controls for your video. Disabling this function will mean that your visitors do not see the video control interface, and as such cannot pause, or scroll along the video.

This is intentional, and intended for videos that provide ambient effects. Please note that toggling Autoplay will disable the Controls option, and vice versa.
