Understanding New Statistics: Heatmap

The heatmap visually shows how visitors interact with your Flipbook and which page parts capture their interest effectively.

Updated over 2 months ago

💡 This guide relates to New Flipbook Statistics, which you try by switching in your iPaper account. For our guide on Legacy Statistics, see here.

Our New Statistics also include a Heatmap tab, that shows you, how your Flipbook visitors browse your Flipbook, and the elements they interact with.

While visually similar to our Legacy Statistics heatmap, our updated version now presents you with more information you can use to understand your visitors' browsing habits.

📖 This guide explains:

How are heatmaps generated?

A Flipbook's heatmap is generated using the latest 500 interactions per single page.

Depending on the number of interactions on a specific point or area, a color range is applied, ranging from blue to green to yellow to red, to illustrate the number of interactions in that area, relative to the visible pages.

'Colder' colors, such as blue, denote fewer interactions, whereas 'warmer' colors such as red indicate more interactions.

What data is collected to generate a heatmap?

iPaper tracks the on-page coordinates for the first interaction per visitor on each new page visited.

💡 An interaction is any click/tap done inside the bound of the Flipbook. So UI (Top-, Sidebar etc.) interactions are ignored.

Tracked heatmap interactions are:

  • On Desktop: Any click-interaction on the page, including double click for zoom, a click on any point on the page, or a link click.

  • On Mobile/tablet: Touch/tap interactions including, double tab to zoom or pinch to zoom but excluding drag interactions to scroll, move around or slide. Also included are any link clicks.

How to read your Flipbook's heatmap

The new heatmap differentiates between interactions that occur on a left-facing, or right-facing page. Whereas previously, interactions were bundled together per spread, you can now see the difference in interactions per individual page.

Above your Flipbook's heatmap, you can also find a summary of statistics for each page, including:

  • Views: The number of times a page was view by your readers.

  • Link interactions: The accumulated number of link interactions on the page.

  • Average time spent on spread: The average time your readers spent looking at the page.

Additional interaction data

Hovering your mouse over a link (represented by a dotted line) on your heatmap, will show you:

  • the link type

  • the link info (the enrichment ID)

  • the number of link interactions
