PDF Tagging: Text

How to tag your PDF with SKUs

Updated over 3 weeks ago

As covered in the Enrichment Automation article, iPaper needs to find SKUs (Product IDs) in the PDF to be able to create shop links.

There are several ways to tag your PDF to include them:

Visible Product IDs

Visible product IDs, refers to having on-page IDs, which usually are next to the product. This simply demands that you write the IDs as part of your design process and export with selectable text.

Please note: Spaces in visible product ID text will cause the automation to 'read' it as multiple product IDs. Therefore, you should use, for example, hyphens or underscores instead of spaces.

For best practice:

  • Use a simple font

  • Use the same font across SKUs

  • Keep the font size consistent across all SKUs

  • Keep SKUs text boxes clean from other text and vector elements.

To make sure you export with selectable text, follow the exporting guidelines here:

Hidden Product IDs

Hidden IDs, offer the most flexibility, as iPaper will read the IDs, but these won’t be visually present on the flipbook.

That way, during the design process, you and your team, can decide the exact position of the shop icons.

Important: If this is something you can easily implement, we highly suggest this option over the rest.

Please note: Spaces in hidden product ID text will cause the automation to 'read' it as multiple product IDs. Therefore, you should use, for example, hyphens or underscores instead of spaces.

The following guide will show you the process of creating hidden layers in InDesign

Comment Product IDs

PDF comments offer the possibility of adding hidden product IDs when you don’t have access to the InDesign file, or for some reason, adding hidden layers in InDesign is not a possibility for you.

To do this, simply open your PDF in Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Pro:

  1. Click Comment from the side panel

  2. On the top menu bar, use a text box or the text tool to add your product IDs.

Important

  • Do not use the Sticky Note functionality, as the iPaper system can’t read nor extract text from this type of note.

Please note: Spaces in comments are, contrary to visible and hidden text, 'read' by the automation as a single ID. Therefore, if your product IDs contain spaces, using comments as the tagging method may be the best solution for you.
